Boulters Tor

The walk up Boulters Tor rewards you with one of those proper Devon views that makes the climb feel worthwhile. It's a modest peak above Tavistock, nothing dramatic, but when you reach the rocky outcrop at the top you get sight lines across Dartmoor that stretch for miles on clear days.

The tor itself is a granite formation - you'll scramble over boulders near the summit, which keeps things interesting for anyone older than about eight. The climb takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest car park, depending on your fitness and how often you stop for breath. It's not steep enough to be annoying, but it's steady work.

Walkers and Dartmoor enthusiasts will find this worth the detour. Families with younger children might find the scramble a bit fiddly - nothing dangerous, just time-consuming with small legs. The views are your real payoff here rather than any facilities or amenities at the top; there's nothing there except rocks and space.

Based at Langstone Manor Holiday Park, just 2.6 miles away, you could knock this out as a half-morning walk before heading elsewhere on Dartmoor. Lydford Caravan & Camping Park is also within striking distance at 4.6 miles. Both give you a proper base for exploring the moor without being stuck in a town. Go when the weather's settled - on a grey drizzly day you'll see nothing and wish you'd waited.
