Bomere Pool

Shallow waters and reed beds create a proper wildlife haven just minutes from Shrewsbury's outskirts. Bomere Pool stretches across farmland like a natural mirror, attracting everything from grey herons to kingfishers if you're lucky enough to spot one darting between the willows.

Birdwatchers will get the most from this spot - bring binoculars and allow at least an hour to properly scan the water and surrounding grassland. The pool supports breeding waterfowl including great crested grebes, and winter brings flocks of wigeon and teal. Walking the perimeter takes about 45 minutes at a gentle pace.

Families with young children might find it lacks obvious entertainment value. There's no playground or café, just peaceful water and wildlife. But for nature-loving kids who don't mind a quieter pace, it's lovely for pond dipping and spotting dragonflies in summer.

The setting feels genuinely rural despite being so close to town. Early morning visits offer the best wildlife activity, plus you'll often have the place to yourself. Evening light across the water can be quite special too.
