Bole Hill

The walk up Bole Hill rewards you with proper views across the Hope Valley - that wide, green sprawl of Derbyshire at your feet. It's a modest peak by Peak District standards, but the climb from Hope itself takes under an hour, which means families with younger legs won't lose patience halfway up.

What you're actually doing is a straightforward moorland walk on decent paths. Nothing technical, no scrambling, just steady gradient and the kind of views that remind you why people bother with the Peaks in the first place. On a clear day you can see across to some of the bigger hitters - Lose Hill and Mam Tor loom grey in the distance.

It's free, obviously. Park in Hope and you're away. Best to go earlier rather than later - the valley fills with shadow as afternoon sets in, and the whole thing becomes less interesting once the light goes thin. Spring through autumn makes sense; winter turns the moorland bog into something properly marshy.

If you're staying at North Lees Campsite or any of the others within a few miles, this works as a half-day outing that doesn't demand serious fitness. It's not a destination in itself - more a decent walk that fits handily into a Peak District holiday. The nearby ridges and valleys offer harder, longer hikes if you want them, but Bole Hill is the accessible entry point. Well worth an afternoon if you're in the area.
