Blue Lagoon - Abereiddi

The water here is impossibly turquoise - almost too vivid to believe. The Blue Lagoon at Abereiddi is actually a flooded slate quarry, and on a clear day it genuinely looks like someone's doctored the photograph. It's free to visit and takes about thirty minutes to look around properly, though you can easily stretch that to an hour if you're taking photos or fancy a paddle.

This is a swimming spot first and foremost. People come to splash about, though the water stays pretty cold year-round. The surrounding quarry walls are dramatic - all craggy slate and industrial history - and there's a small beach area where you can sit and take it in. Walkers will appreciate the coastal path access, and it works well as a stop-off between bigger attractions rather than a day out in itself.

The journey from Haverfordwest takes about twenty minutes inland. If you're camping nearby - Pembrokeshire Meadows is the strongest-rated option at 4.6 stars and only four and a half miles away - you could easily pop here of a morning before heading to bigger Pembrokeshire draws. Celtic Camping sits closer at less than a mile, so you're well placed for a quick visit.

Worth seeing? Absolutely. Worth planning your whole holiday around? Not really. But if you're staying in the area and fancy somewhere different for a dip with proper scenery, the Blue Lagoon delivers. Go on a sunny day - grey skies don't do it favours.
