Blackpill SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest)

Blackpill sits on Swansea's western edge as a proper coastal nature reserve - all salt marsh, mudflats and scrubland that looks scrappy at first glance but rewards actual attention. The walk out across the boardwalks gives you good views of the Gower Peninsula, and if you time it right with the tide you'll spot wading birds working the flats. It's the kind of place where serious birders come with binoculars and notebooks, but families won't feel out of place either.

The SSSI designation means it's protected for its ecological value rather than pretty views, so don't expect landscaped paths or visitor facilities. What you get instead is something genuinely wild on the edge of the city - mudskippers, salt-tolerant plants, the occasional otter if you're lucky. Budget an hour or two depending on whether you're just stretching your legs or actually trying to identify species.

Spring and autumn migrations are your best bet for birdwatching. Summer can get a bit dry and less interesting. It's free to access, which is just as well given there's no café or amenities.

If you're based at Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park or Nicholaston Farm just down the coast, Blackpill works well as a morning wander before heading to the proper beach. It's not flashy or Instagram-ready, but it's the real thing - working habitat rather than managed attraction. Worth the visit if you like your nature unglamorous.
