Blackdown Plantation

The Blackdown Hills rise up sharply from the Somerset levels, and this plantation sits right at the top - a proper vantage point. It's a working forestry area rather than a manicured woodland walk, with conifer plantations mixed in with older broadleaf trees that've been there long enough to feel established. The views back towards Tiverton and out across Devon are genuinely worth the climb. On a clear day you can see for miles.

It's the kind of place that rewards a half-day visit. Bring decent boots - the tracks can get boggy even in summer - and allow a good two hours to properly explore without rushing. The walking itself is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might flag on the gradual ascent. History buffs will appreciate the Bronze Age barrows dotted across the summit; they're easy to spot once you know what you're looking for.

There's no visitor centre or cafe, which means you won't find crowds. It also means you should bring your own water and snacks. Free to access and open year-round, though autumn's when the light hits best. Winter can be grim if it's been raining.

If you're staying at Nirvana Glamping just over the way, this is an obvious morning walk - close enough that you could be back for lunch. The plantation works well combined with a proper visit to Tiverton itself, which has the Tiverton Castle and a decent town centre worth a browse. Not a showstopper attraction on its own, but solid walking country with genuine views.
