About Black Tor

Getting up to Black Tor is a proper scramble, and that's half the appeal. This granite outcrop on Dartmoor rises abruptly from the moorland near Tavistock, and once you've hauled yourself to the summit, the 360-degree views across the moor and beyond are genuinely worth the leg work.

It's not a technical climb - more of an energetic walk with a bit of rock-hopping at the end - but wear decent boots because the ground gets boggy and the final push demands some scrambling. On a clear day you can see right across Devon, though I'll be honest: in cloud and drizzle, which is half the time up here, it's a bit atmospheric but not much use for photographs.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a stroll and it's not a destination in itself - you're looking at two hours up and back from the nearest carpark, plus whatever time you spend on top catching your breath. Families with older kids who don't mind climbing will manage fine. Toddlers and those after an easy meander won't.

There's no admission charge and no facilities at the tor itself, so bring water. Early morning visits beat the afternoon crowds, and the spring moorland flowers make May and June especially pleasant times to visit. If you're staying at Langstone Manor, it's barely half an hour away, and sits nicely into a Dartmoor National Park itinerary - you can tackle Black Tor alongside other peaks without doubling back.
