Black Dog Hill

The views from Black Dog Hill proper take your breath away on a clear day - rolling Wiltshire countryside stretching out beneath you in every direction. It's a nature reserve that rewards walkers with open grassland, scrubby woodland, and genuine peace. You won't find crowds here, which is half the appeal.

The hill itself is modest in height but feels significant once you're up there. The path isn't demanding, making it accessible for most fitness levels, though it can get muddy after rain. Allow an hour or so for a proper wander and a sit-down with the view. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching - the reserve attracts everything from woodpeckers to various raptors depending on the season.

Calne is your nearest town for supplies and a decent coffee beforehand. If you're camping nearby - Blackland Lakes is just 1.8 miles away and comes highly rated - you could easily slip this walk into a morning before heading to another activity. The Moors Campsite, equally excellent, sits 5.6 miles out if you've based yourself further afield.

It's the sort of place that makes sense as part of a wider walking day rather than a standalone destination. Pair it with exploring Calne's market square or heading towards Devizes - you won't spend three hours here, but that's fine. Local knowledge matters: check conditions before you go, and don't expect facilities on the hill itself.
