Birches Valley Forest Centre

Deep in Cannock Chase, this visitor centre serves as the gateway to one of Staffordshire's most accessible forest experiences. The centre itself houses displays about the local wildlife and woodland management, though it's really the forest trails that draw most visitors here.

Families with young children will find this spot particularly useful - the marked trails are pushchair-friendly and there's a decent car park right at the entrance. The circular walks range from gentle 20-minute strolls to longer rambles that can stretch to a couple of hours if you're feeling energetic.

What sets Birches Valley apart from other forest walks is the variety of terrain within such a compact area. You'll encounter heathland, dense woodland and even some surprisingly dramatic views across the Chase. The red and fallow deer are often spotted here, particularly early morning or late afternoon.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place - there's plenty of space for four-legged friends to explore safely. Mountain bikers also frequent the trails, so keep an ear out if you're walking with little ones.

From Rugeley it's a short drive into the forest, making it an easy day trip from any of the nearby holiday parks. Allow at least two hours to do the centre justice, though dedicated walkers could easily spend half a day exploring the wider network of paths that connect to other parts of Cannock Chase.
