Pelsall North Common Local Nature Reserve

The path into Pelsall North Common takes you through a proper working landscape - not some manicured country park, but the real deal. You're walking into 82 hectares of heathland and woodland just a few miles from Rugeley, where the whole point is that it's managed to stay wild and useful. The Common supports rare plants and birds you won't find everywhere, which is why it's been designated a Local Nature Reserve.

For walkers, this is brilliant. The terrain shifts between open heathland - lovely when the heather blooms - and denser woodland sections where you actually feel like you've escaped somewhere. It's not a tourist trap with waymarked trails and information boards every fifty metres. You need a bit of map sense, but that's part of the appeal. Families with older kids will get something out of it; younger ones might find it a bit shapeless after thirty minutes.

Historically, commons like this were used for grazing and fuel gathering. Pelsall's been working that way for centuries, which is precisely why the wildlife thrives. The heathland management isn't there by accident - volunteers and specialists actively maintain it to keep the rare species intact.

Combine it with Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site down the road and you've got a proper base for exploring the area. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're serious about walking, longer if you're birdwatching. Admission's free. Best in late summer when the heather's at its peak, though the winter woodland walking's solid too.
