Bellhill Wood

The walk through Bellhill Wood, just outside Chelmsford, is one of those proper Essex surprises - a quiet patch of mixed woodland where you can actually lose the sound of traffic. Trees tower over you, light filters through in broken patches, and the ground underfoot is soft enough that you stop crunching loudly after the first few minutes.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than anything dramatic. You're looking at mature oak and beech, plenty of natural cover, and if you time it right, enough wildlife activity to keep younger eyes engaged. The paths are reasonably clear, though muddy stretches are guaranteed after rain. Allow forty minutes to an hour to properly wander without rushing.

Walkers and families wanting a quick escape from suburban Chelmsford will get the most from this. Kids are unlikely to be bored if they're the type who enjoy building camps or spotting birds - the wood has genuine character. History types might find less to grab onto here compared to other Essex attractions, but it's a solid leg-stretcher between other plans.
