Beecroft Hill

The walk up Beecroft Hill from Leeds takes you out of the city grit and into proper moorland within twenty minutes or so. It's not dramatic - no dramatic drops or exposed ridges - but that's rather the point. You get views across West Yorkshire without the crowds you'd find on the Pennine peaks further west.

Most people tackle it as a circular walk, combining it with nearby routes across the moorland. The path is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the moorland repetitive after an hour. Serious walkers often use it as part of a longer day out rather than a standalone destination. The summit itself is understated - no trig point drama, just open ground and the satisfaction of being higher than Leeds.

Timing-wise, allow two to three hours for a comfortable up-and-around loop. Conditions matter here. On a clear day with decent visibility, the walk justifies itself. In mist or rain, it's rather bleak. The moorland can be waterlogged after heavy rain, so check conditions first.

If you're staying at St Helena's Caravan Park or Esholt Holiday Caravan Park - both within five miles - this works as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. Fairmead Farm Glamping, slightly further out, gives you decent access too. It's the sort of walk that locals know well and visitors often miss, which probably tells you something. Worth doing if you're in the area and the weather's on your side.
