Bay Pond

A modest freshwater lake sitting just outside Lingfield in Surrey, Bay Pond is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is rather the point. It's ringed with trees that lean right down to the water's edge, giving it a surprisingly secluded feel considering how close it is to residential areas. There's a walking path that loops around it, taking maybe twenty minutes at a leisurely pace, and benches dotted about if you fancy a sit-down with a flask.

This works best for people after a gentle stroll rather than a destination in itself. Dog walkers seem to have claimed it as their own, which speaks volumes about how dog-friendly it is. Bird spotters occasionally show up too - nothing dramatic, but the usual suspects like herons and coots are about. Kids will manage perhaps an hour before restlessness sets in, unless they're the sort who'll spend that long chucking stones in the water, which they absolutely will.

The whole thing is free and accessible whenever you fancy, though there's no formal infrastructure - no café, no facilities, no charges. Just a pond and a path. If you're based at Long Acres Caravan & Camping Park or the glamping setup nearby, it's an easy morning wander to stretch your legs without needing to pile everyone in the car again. On a quieter weekday morning, it's actually rather lovely. Don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip, but it's solid for what it is - a proper Surrey walk that asks nothing of you except to show up.
