Barrowford Reservoir

The water stretches out calm and wide, ringed by trees that lean down to touch their own reflections. Barrowford Reservoir sits just outside Nelson, a proper working water supply that's somehow managed to stay genuinely pleasant without feeling manicured or over-managed. You're here because it's a decent spot for a walk - the paths around it are straightforward, no scrambling required, and the whole circuit takes a couple of hours without pushing yourself. Birdwatchers do well out of it. Walkers trailing round from nearby Pendle Hill or exploring the Ribble Valley often stop here as a break in the day rather than a destination in itself, which is honest.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the local glamping spots - Higher Grange or Trawden Forest are both within reasonable driving distance - or if you're tent-camping at Shay Gate Farm. The water's too cold and too functional for swimming, mind you. Families with young kids will get restless after forty minutes unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy a quiet walk and spotting the occasional duck. If that's your crew, fine. Otherwise it's more of an add-on than a main event.

Go early on a weekday if you can - it's popular enough at weekends to lose some of its peacefulness. Free to access. No facilities to speak of, so bring a flask if that matters to you.
