A proper walk through Barrowford Memorial Park takes you alongside the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, with woodland that's dense enough to feel properly removed from Nelson's streets. It's a local favourite rather than a destination drawcard - the kind of place where dog walkers outnumber tourists and that's entirely the point.

The park runs for a fair stretch along the water, with footpaths that meander through trees and open onto canal-side benches where you can watch narrowboats pass. Bird watchers find it worthwhile; the mix of woodland and waterside habitat pulls in decent variety. Kids can manage it easily enough, though it's not the sort of place with play equipment or designated attractions - they'll need to be the type who enjoy spotting wildlife or skimming stones rather than expecting activities.

Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander, less if you're just after a quick circuit. There's no entrance fee and no set hours to speak of - it's open access parkland, which means you turn up when it suits. The terrain is easy underfoot, mostly level pathways along the towpath.
