Baron Hill Golf Club

The drive up to Baron Hill takes you past Beaumaris Castle, then winds through proper Welsh countryside before opening onto eighteen holes that command views across the Menai Strait to Snowdonia. It's a links-style course sat on elevated ground, which means the wind comes into play almost every shot and the views distract you constantly. You'll lose at least three balls to the rough if you're a mid-handicapper.

The course itself isn't championship-standard, but it doesn't pretend to be. What you get instead is solid, honest golf with enough character to stay interesting across a round. The greens are quick, the fairways are tight in places, and that backdrop of mountains and water never gets old. Golfers who prefer manicured inland courses might find it a bit rugged. It's a members' club that accepts visitors, so you'll need to ring ahead and book a slot. Greens fees are reasonable for Wales, and eighteen holes will take you around four and a half hours depending on how many balls you're retrieving from the bracken. Summer weekends book up fast.

For a park holiday based around Wonderfully Wild or Plas Yn Llangoed, Baron Hill makes a proper morning out - get your round in before lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring Beaumaris itself or heading to one of the island's beaches. You could easily fit it alongside walking, family attractions, and the usual caravan park activities. Go when the wind isn't howling off the Irish Sea.
