Barmouth Sandcastle

The sandcastle at Barmouth isn't some permanent structure - it's a seasonal landmark that appears on the beach when conditions allow, and honestly, that's half the appeal. You get a proper sandcastle built by locals or volunteers, sometimes quite elaborate, sometimes just a solid effort depending on the tide and weather. It's the sort of thing that makes you realise why families pitch up here rather than head to the more polished seaside spots further south.

Barmouth itself is a working Welsh seaside town with a genuine feel to it. The sandcastle sits on the beach proper, so you're not paying entrance fees or dealing with visitor centre queues - just park up, grab an ice cream, and wander down. Kids absolutely love spotting it and running about in the sand. Parents get to sit on the promenade with a flask and watch the Snowdonia hills across the water. On a decent day it's cracking.

Timing matters though. Spring and summer are best - winter storms can demolish the whole thing. You could spend half an hour here or make it part of a longer beach day. The beach itself is long and wide, so there's plenty of room to escape the crowds.

Staying at Hendre Mynach just up the road makes sense - it's close enough to pop down whenever, far enough that you're actually in proper countryside. Rowen's another solid option if you prefer a quieter base. Neither are fancy, but that suits Barmouth's unpretentious vibe perfectly.
