Bargh Hill

The walk up Bargh Hill won't take long, but that's rather the point. It's a proper little fell with views that punch well above its weight, sat just outside Settle in the Yorkshire Dales. You're looking at maybe an hour there and back from the trailhead, which makes it ideal if you've got half a day to kill or kids who aren't ready for the serious mountains yet.

What you get at the top is a genuine 360-degree spread across the Dales - Pen-y-ghent looming to one side, the rolling moorland stretching out in every direction. On a clear day it's cracking. On a grey one, it's moody and atmospheric. The climb itself is straightforward, nothing technical, though it can be a bit muddy after rain so bring proper boots.

Families will find this manageable, and older kids can reach the summit without drama. Walkers using Settle as a base will appreciate having a quick win under their belt before tackling the heavier stuff nearby. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots around here - Ribblesdale Pods is lovely if you fancy something plush, or Orcaber Farm if you want proper campground atmosphere - this is the sort of thing you can knock out before breakfast.

The real value is the lack of faffing about. No visitor centre, no crowds, no admission fee that you're never quite sure was worth it. Just a hill, a path, and decent views. That's enough.
