Bardsea Country Park

The woodland paths at Bardsea Country Park wind through proper old-growth beech and oak, with glimpses of Morecambe Bay opening up between the trees as you climb. It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured country estate, which means it feels genuinely wild - the kind of place where you might spot roe deer or a buzzard rather than queues of visitors.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours if you're not rushing, though you can do shorter loops depending on fitness. The terrain's not brutal, but there are inclines that'll make you work for it. The whole thing makes sense as a half-day outing from Grange-over-Sands, just a few minutes' drive away - you could knock this out before lunch and still have time for an afternoon exploring the coast or heading to one of the nearby holiday parks like Haven Lakeland Leisure or Willow Tree.

It's brilliant for anyone who actually wants to walk rather than just potter about a visitor centre. Families with older kids will get on fine; under-sixes might find the distances tedious.
