Roudsea Wood & Mosses National Nature Reserve

The boardwalks wind through something genuinely rare - a working mosaic of raised bog, woodland, and open water that most people drive past without knowing it's there. Roudsea Wood & Mosses sits just outside Grange-over-Sands and feels properly wild in a way that surprises you given how close it is to civilization.

You're walking through sphagnum moss beds and stunted pines, spotting sundews and the occasional dragonfly. The reserve protects a habitat that's become scarce across Britain, and it shows - the whole place has that untouched quality that makes your legs feel lighter. There are marked trails rather than manicured paths, which means you need to pay attention, but that's half the appeal.

This is brilliant for naturalists and anyone keen on bog ecology. Bird watchers come here too. Kids will manage fine if they're over seven or so, though it's not a "burn energy" sort of spot - more contemplative. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're photographing or taking notes.

It's free to access, which is refreshing. The nearest proper base is Grange-over-Sands, and if you're staying at Old Park Wood or Willow Tree Holiday Parks nearby, this makes a solid morning walk without feeling like a tourist trap experience. The ground gets muddy - proper muddy - after rain, so timing matters. Spring and early autumn are your best bets for visibility and fewer insects.
