Bar Mere

Bar Mere sits just outside Whitchurch like a proper secret - a glacial lake surrounded by woodland that most people driving past on the A41 haven't got a clue about. It's a straightforward affair: water, trees, and a handful of walking paths that loop around the shoreline. Nothing fancy, but genuinely peaceful.

The main draw here is the walk itself rather than any facilities. You'll find yourself on decent paths that hug the water's edge, with occasional benches if you fancy a sit-down and a thermos. It takes about an hour to complete the circuit at a leisurely pace, maybe 45 minutes if you're keen. The lake is shallow in places and supports a decent number of waterfowl - herons, grebes, the usual suspects - so it's worth bringing binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.

Families with younger kids will manage fine; the paths are well-maintained and there's nowhere particularly dangerous, though you'll want to watch them near the water's edge. History buffs won't find much to chew on, but walkers and birders will get a solid couple of hours out of it, especially in spring and autumn when migration's in full swing.

It's free to access and open year-round. From any of the nearby holiday parks - Bradley Hall Rural Escapes or Marbury Camp & Lodge are both within a few miles - it makes a straightforward morning walk before heading into Whitchurch proper for lunch. Don't expect drama, but do expect genuine quiet.
