The walk up Banc Cefngarreg rewards you with proper views across the Tywi Valley - the kind of panorama that makes you understand why people bother with hills in the first place. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards, nothing that'll leave you gasping, but the approach from Llandovery is straightforward enough and the summit gives you a genuine sense of having earned the vista.

This is walker territory, mainly. You won't find much in the way of facilities or marked trails - it's the sort of place where a decent map and some hill sense matter. The climb takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and which route you fancy from the village. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit long without distraction.

What makes Banc Cefngarreg worth the effort is how it slots into a proper Carmarthenshire walking holiday. From either Erwlon Caravan & Camping Park or Riverside Pods - both excellent bases a few miles out - you can tackle this peak and still have energy left for exploring the river valleys and smaller summits that pepper the area. The surrounding landscape is dotted with other walks of similar length, so you won't exhaust the options in a week.

Go when the weather's clear enough to see something from the top. A misty day here is just a damp trudge. Free to visit, naturally - just park thoughtfully near Llandovery and head out.
