Bamford Moor

The walk up Bamford Moor from Hope Valley rewards you with proper views across the Dark Peak - moorland stretches in every direction, purple with heather in late summer. It's not a technical climb, more of a steady trudge across open ground, and you'll find yourself alone up here even on weekends, which says something about how many walkers skip it for the flashier peaks nearby.

The moor itself is fairly bleak in the best possible way. No stone circles, no café, no Instagram moments - just you, the wind, and the landscape. On a clear day the visibility is excellent; on a grey day it's moody and atmospheric. Allow two to three hours for a proper circuit from the lower slopes, depending on your pace and how much wandering you do.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. Families with young children might find the exposure a bit tedious without a defined destination at the top - there's no summit landmark or shelter, just moorland rolling on. History types won't find much here either, unless you're interested in the land itself.

If you're camping at North Lees Campsite or Laneside - both within a couple of miles - it's a cracking spot for an evening walk or a half-day outing. The nearby Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite puts you well for tackling this alongside Mam Tor or Win Hill, giving you proper variety across the valley. Go when the weather's settled. Mist makes this place feel rather bleak rather than beautiful.
