Audley Reservoir

The water sits flat and still most days, ringed by woodland that's proper green even when the rest of Lancashire's looking a bit grey. Audley Reservoir, just outside Clitheroe, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a working water supply that somehow remains peaceful enough to feel like an escape. It's not dramatic or showy. There are no visitor centres or marked trails, just a decent walk around the perimeter if you fancy it, and the kind of stillness that makes you realise how rare that is.

This works best for walkers and birdwatchers. You'll spot herons if you're quiet, and the reflections off the water can be lovely on a clear morning. Families with restless kids might find an hour here is enough - there's not much to do besides walk and look, which is exactly the point for some people and exactly the problem for others. It's free to visit, naturally, since there's no infrastructure to speak of.

Stay at Pendle View Holiday Park just a mile away and you've got a decent base for exploring the Ribble Valley. Clitheroe itself is worth a mooch - proper market town with a castle and some decent pubs - but the reservoir is better as a quiet punctuation mark in your week rather than a main event. Go early if you can, before the dog walkers arrive.
