Audley End House and Gardens

You'll round a bend near Saffron Walden and suddenly it's there - a proper stately home that makes you stop in your tracks. Audley End House is the kind of place that reminds you why Essex has more going on than people give it credit for.

The house itself is a showstopper: a vast Jacobean mansion with enough rooms to get genuinely lost in. Inside, you're wandering through period-furnished chambers, kitchens with working ranges, and galleries hung with actual paintings. The grounds are equally impressive - formal gardens that stretch out in front of the building, woodland walks, a river that runs through the estate. It's all very grand without feeling stuffed or impenetrable.

History buffs will be in their element. This was built for Thomas Howard in the 1600s, and the layers of ownership and renovation are all explained properly. Families with older kids do well here because there's enough to explore that they won't get bored after an hour. Younger children might flag unless you break it up between the house and a garden wander. The outdoor bits are genuinely lovely, so it's not a complete indoor slog.

It's worth setting aside a full afternoon. The site can feel quiet even on weekends, which is rather nice - you're not battling crowds. Admission charges apply but aren't extortionate. If you're staying at Hidden Gem Glamping or Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, it makes a sensible rainy-day plan or a proper cultural break from camping life. The villages around Saffron Walden are pleasant enough for a wander afterwards too.
