Audley End Enchanted Railway

The miniature railway that winds through the grounds of Audley End House is genuinely charming - not the sort of thing you'd expect to find tucked away near Saffron Walden, but there it is. A proper little steam train rattles along narrow-gauge tracks through woodland and past the big house itself, and it's the kind of attraction that works brilliantly for families with younger kids who haven't yet developed strong opinions about how they spend their time.

You board from a small station, and the journey itself takes around 20 minutes or so. It's not particularly thrilling - don't come expecting white-knuckle stuff - but there's something genuinely pleasant about pottering along at walking pace, seeing parts of the estate you wouldn't otherwise access. The railway's been there for decades, which means it has that slightly weathered charm rather than the corporate polish of newer attractions.

Historically minded adults might find it a bit thin, though the wider Audley End estate has proper substance if you've got the afternoon.
