Assynt Free Church of Scotland

The white-harled kirk sits alone on the hillside above Sutherland, looking much as it must have done when it was built in the 1880s. There's something affecting about finding a proper Free Church out here - the kind of place where you can almost hear the old hymns echoing off the walls even when it's empty and quiet.

Inside, it's spare and dignified: wooden pews, a simple pulpit, high windows that let the Highland light pour in. The congregation was never large, and these days it feels very much like a place held in reverence rather than daily use. If you're interested in Scottish religious history or the Free Church schism that shaped so much of the Highlands, it's genuinely moving. Casual visitors might find ten minutes enough; proper history buffs could spend longer just absorbing the atmosphere.

The real draw is the location. You're up on the moor with views spilling out across wild countryside, and getting here means driving into some of the most remote and beautiful stretches of Sutherland. It works well as a stop on a longer exploring drive rather than a destination in itself.

If you're camping at nearby Clachtoll Beach - and you should be, it's excellent - this makes a decent half-morning sortie. Check locally about access before you go; these old kirks can be temperamental about visitors. Allow fifteen minutes each way from the main road, and wear proper shoes for the track.
