Ashen Coppice

There's a decent woodland walk waiting at Ashen Coppice, just outside Hereford. It's proper old-school coppiced woodland - the sort of place where you can actually see how centuries of forestry have shaped the landscape, with regrowth coming thick from the stumps. The paths wind through mixed broadleaf, and if you time it right in spring or autumn, it's worth the effort for the light filtering through the canopy.

Walkers will get the most from it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour or so - there's not much drama to the terrain, no dramatic viewpoints. But if you're after a solid two-hour woodland stomp without serious elevation gain, it does the job. The access isn't entirely clear from what I can find, so check locally before you go - these smaller woodlands can be a bit gatekeep-y about parking.

Stay at one of the nearby farms - Kaya at Blackhill Farm is barely a mile away, and Chapel House Farm Campsite just under two. Both put you in decent walking country without the hassle of driving between sites. Combine it with a wander along Offa's Dyke if you want something with actual purpose and views. Ashen Coppice works best as part of a broader Herefordshire rambling trip rather than a destination in itself.
