Twyn y Gaer

Twyn y Gaer is a modest hill fort just outside Hereford with Iron Age earthworks still visible if you know what you're looking at. The climb takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and the views across the Herefordshire countryside are genuinely worth the leg work - on a clear day you can see the Black Mountains rising up to the west. It's not dramatic or showy. The ramparts are softened by grass and time, so you need a bit of imagination to picture the defensive ditches in their heyday, but that's actually rather nice. Walkers will find it a straightforward afternoon outing, easily combined with nearby routes around Hereford. Families with primary-school age kids will probably get about an hour out of it before restlessness sets in. History enthusiasts who enjoy decoding ancient landscapes will find it more rewarding than casual visitors. Free to visit and no gates or restrictions - you just park sensibly and head up. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots like Goytree or Offas Dyke Retreat, both within a few miles, Twyn y Gaer makes a perfectly fine hour-long detour without being a main event. Best visited in dry weather when the paths aren't boggy. Spring and autumn light is lovely here, though frankly any time suits it. Don't expect tea rooms or interpretation boards - bring your own knowledge or a decent guidebook.
