Black Hill

The walk up Black Hill rewards you with proper views across Herefordshire and into Wales - on a clear day you can see the Black Mountains properly stacked against the horizon. It's a straightforward hike from Hereford, taking you through moorland that feels wilder than you'd expect this close to town. The summit itself sits at around 645 metres, and the approach is steep enough to make your legs work but not so brutal that it'll put off keen family walkers.

This is one for people who want a proper walk rather than a gentle stroll. Allow a couple of hours up and down, depending on fitness. The terrain can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter more than you might think. History types will find less to grab onto here than at some peaks - it's nature rather than ruins - but walkers after big sky and distance will absolutely get their money's worth.

You're well positioned if you're camping nearby. Chapel House Farm Campsite sits less than a mile away, making it dead easy to tackle Black Hill as a morning or afternoon expedition. Olchon Valley Campsite and Kaya at Blackhill Farm are equally close. If you're based further afield around Hay-on-Wye - say at Hay-on-Wye Caravan Park or By the Wye Glamping - it's still an easy enough drive to the trailhead. The whole area folds into a week's worth of walking and exploring the borderlands. Worth the detour if you've got legs and weather on your side.
