Arenig Fawr South Ridge Top

The South Ridge of Arenig Fawr is one of those walks that rewards you properly for the effort. This isn't a casual stroll - it's a genuine hill climb in the Snowdonia foothills, starting from near Bala and gaining height quickly through open moorland until you're on the exposed ridge itself. The summit sits at 854 metres, and once you're up there, the views across to Cader Idris and down towards Lake Bala are genuinely impressive, especially on a clear day.

The route is steep in places, particularly lower down, but the ridge itself makes the slog worthwhile. You're walking along a proper knife-edge for the final push to the top - nothing dramatic like mountaineering, but enough to keep your attention. Most walkers allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit. Weather matters hugely here; on a grey day it's serviceable fell-walking, but catch it in good conditions and it's genuinely one of the better walks in the area.
