Ard na Cuile

The walk up Ard na Cuile from Oban takes about two hours if you're moving steadily, and it's one of those hills that rewards the effort without demanding serious scrambling skills. The summit sits at 346 metres - nothing alpine, but high enough to give you proper views across the Firth of Lorn and out towards the islands. On a clear day you can pick out Mull and Lismore sprawling out below.

This is genuinely good walking country rather than a tourist trap. You'll share the path with locals who know the route intimately, not coachloads. The terrain is straightforward enough for reasonably fit families, though younger kids might need a breather halfway up. The final push to the trig point is steep but brief.

What makes it work as part of a park stay is the proximity to Oban - you're looking at maybe ten minutes' drive from Oban Holiday Park or Tanunda Pods, which means you can knock it out as a morning adventure without losing the rest of your day. There's nothing fancy waiting at the summit - no cafe, no visitor centre - just you and the view. That's precisely why it's worth doing.

Head up on a weekday if possible. Weekends pull in more casual hikers, and the narrow bits can get a touch bottlenecky. Free to access, naturally. Allow a full morning if you're taking photographs or just sitting about enjoying the Argyll landscape.
