Anglesey Mountain

The walk up Anglesey Mountain isn't actually that punishing despite what the name suggests. It's a decent-sized hill rather than a proper peak, rising above Newry with views that stretch across the surrounding countryside if the weather's on your side. The ascent takes around an hour depending on your pace and which route you pick - there are a few options, some more direct than others.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a day-long expedition, so families with kids who can handle a proper hike without complaining will manage fine. You won't need specialist kit, just decent boots because the ground can be boggy in places, particularly after rain. The summit itself is nothing fancy - a cairn and the satisfaction of having climbed it. What makes it worthwhile is the panorama on a clear day. From up there, you can see right across the Mourne Mountains to one side and down towards Newry on the other.

If you're basing yourself at Kilbroney Caravan Park, which sits about five miles away, this makes a proper morning or afternoon outing. It's free to access, naturally - it's just a mountain. Allow two to three hours including rest time at the top. Best tackled in decent weather; there's not much appeal in walking through mist and drizzle when you're doing it for the views. Worth squeezing in if you've got a weekend in the area and fancy something active without overcommitting your entire day.
