Altham Clough Wood

You'll find yourself walking beneath proper old woodland the moment you enter Altham Clough - the kind of place where the canopy gets dense enough that it feels genuinely quiet, even on a weekend. It's a forest rather than a manicured country park, which means roots underfoot and the actual smell of damp earth and decomposing leaves. The walk isn't particularly strenuous, though it's not flat either, and most people manage the main trails in under an hour without rushing.

This is the spot for anyone who wants woodland without the theme park feel. Families with kids old enough to handle muddy paths will enjoy it; younger children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into poking about in leaf litter. Walkers and anyone after some proper forest atmosphere will be far more engaged. The woodland is genuinely attractive in autumn when the light filters through turning leaves, and spring brings wildflowers along the damper sections.

Since it's just outside Clitheroe, it works well as a half-morning excursion while basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots - Higher Grange is five-star rated and within easy driving distance. The Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site is closer still. Altham Clough pairs nicely with a proper walk elsewhere in the Ribble Valley rather than as a destination in itself, but if you're after somewhere genuinely green and undeveloped, it delivers.
