Alport Height

The walk up to Alport Height rewards you with one of Derbyshire's finest vantage points - a proper elevated viewpoint that dominates the landscape between Belper and the surrounding moorland. It's not a massive tourist draw, which is precisely why it's worth the effort.

From the top, you get unobstructed views across the Derwent Valley and towards Matlock way. On a clear day the perspective really opens up - you can see why walkers make the pilgrimage here regularly. The ascent itself is straightforward enough, though your calves will know about it. Allow a couple of hours return, depending on your fitness and how long you linger at the summit.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the trudge tedious without a proper reward at the end - but that view does feel like payment for effort. History buffs won't find much signage or heritage context here; it's geological rather than archaeological.

Alport Height works brilliantly as a morning or late-afternoon excursion if you're based at one of the caravan parks dotted round Carsington Water or near Belper itself. The Firs and Carsington Water are both within easy reach, making it an ideal complement to a park holiday in the area. The walk itself is free, obviously - no gates, no fees, no nonsense. Just bring decent boots and check the weather first. On a grey Derbyshire day, this hilltop can feel a bit exposed and underwhelming. Pick your moment and it's absolutely worth the drive from Belper.
