The Humber estuary has a raw, wind-swept quality that doesn't announce itself loudly. Alkborough Flats, just outside Brough, is where you come to understand what that landscape actually means - it's a nature reserve where the mudflats and saltmarsh stretch out like a canvas, and the birdlife makes the journey worthwhile if you know what you're looking for.

This is proper walking territory, not a manicured visitor centre job. You're here for waders and overwintering wildfowl, particularly in autumn and winter when the flats become a staging post for migrating birds. The paths wind through reed beds and across open ground where the wind doesn't mess about. In spring and summer, the appeal drops off a bit - the mudflats aren't as magically productive when the water level's low and the rare birds have headed north.

Bring binoculars and patience. This isn't somewhere to rush through; allow a couple of hours if you're serious about spotting anything. The nearest facilities are in Brough, so come prepared with water and a proper coat. It's free to access, which is the only way these places should work.
