Alderman's Hill

The walk up Alderman's Hill is a proper leg-stretcher from Greenfield, though calling it a 'peak' is generous - it's more of a moorland rise than a dramatic summit. That said, the views across the Pennines are genuinely worth the slog, especially on a clear day when you can pick out the mill towns spreading out below. The actual walk takes about forty minutes each way from the village, climbing steadily through heather and rough grass with the wind usually in your face. You won't find facilities at the top - no café, no visitor centre, just a modest summit marker and wide-open moorland. Families with young kids might find the terrain a bit steep and boggy in places, but older children who can handle a decent hike will get the sense of achievement. The landscape itself is what pulls you here: rolling purple heather in late summer, that particular silence you only get on the Pennines. It's a decent warm-up if you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park nearby - far enough to feel like an outing, close enough not to eat the whole day. Go when the weather's settled; the mist rolls in fast up here and suddenly you're walking blind. Free to access, naturally. Well worth an afternoon if you're in the area, though don't expect crowds or any reason to linger once you've caught your breath.
