About Airds Hill
From the top you get the full sweep of the surrounding countryside, south towards the Solway and north back across the Lowlands. On a clear day it's genuinely worth doing. On a grey one - which is fairly common round these parts - you'll get mist and slightly damp grass, which is less thrilling.
It works well for families who don't mind a moderate hike, or anyone based at one of the nearby caravan sites wanting to burn off some energy. Walkers will find it a decent little outing rather than a full day commitment. The climb itself is straightforward enough that keen teenagers won't complain, though younger kids might find the trudge tedious if they're not already keen walkers.
There's no charge and no facilities up top - bring water and maybe something to eat if you want to sit about. Allow two hours total if you're taking your time. The best approach is from Dumfries itself, which sits just over a mile from Landis Farm CL and Criffel View. If you're staying at Marthrown of Mabie further out, it's worth combining with other local walks rather than making a standalone trip. Winter can make it boggy, so go in drier months.
