Addlebrough

The walk up Addlebrough from Leyburn is a proper leg-burner, but the views across Wensleydale make it entirely worth the graft. This isn't one of the high drama Pennine peaks - at 1,147 metres it's middling in height - but what you get is an unobstructed panorama across the dale below, with Penhill rising opposite and the valley spreading out like a map at your feet.

The ascent takes roughly ninety minutes depending on fitness and how often you stop for breath. The path climbs steeply at first through farmland, then eases onto the open moorland where the wind picks up considerably. On clear days you can see all the way across to Pen-y-ghent. Walkers will absolutely get the value here, and it's challenging enough to feel like an achievement without requiring technical kit or serious alpine experience.

Families with competent young walkers can manage it, though be prepared for grumbling on the steeper sections - there's no shelter up top, so weather matters. Summer weekends pull crowds, so go midweek if you want it quieter. The whole expedition takes about three hours round trip, leaving plenty of day for exploring Leyburn itself.
