Acorn Lake

The water here is proper still on a calm day - so clear you can see right down to the mud and the odd fish moving through. Acorn Lake sits in the rolling countryside east of York, a spot that's genuinely peaceful without feeling remote or difficult to reach. It's a small lake rather than a sprawling reservoir, which means you can walk round it comfortably in an hour or so, taking in the bankside vegetation and whatever waterfowl are about.

Walkers and bird-watchers will find plenty to occupy them, though don't expect dramatic views or rare sightings - this is a working rural landscape, not a nature reserve on the map. Families with young kids might manage a circuit, but there's limited entertainment beyond the walk itself. If you're camping at Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm just three miles away, or glamping at Acorn Glade closer still, it makes a decent morning outing before heading into York for lunch.

The lake works best as part of a broader day rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with walking the quieter lanes round here, or use it as a break between visits to grander Yorkshire attractions. It's free to access and there's no formal infrastructure to speak of, so wear proper boots if the ground's wet. Spring and early autumn are probably your best bet - fewer midges, pleasanter light, and the grass isn't churned up from summer visitors. Not unmissable, but if you're already staying nearby, it's worth twenty minutes of your time.
