Broomhill Plantation

The plantation spreads across decent woodland just outside York, offering proper quiet forest trails when the city centre gets too rammed. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to lose the crowds without heading halfway across the county.

Walkers will get the most from it. The trails wind through mixed woodland without the drama of steeper terrain, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though you'll want proper shoes if it's been wet. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice rather than rushing through.

Timing-wise, autumn's the obvious choice when the colours shift, but spring's equally decent when everything's coming back. Avoid midweek mornings if you want solitude though - weekends draw the usual suspects from York.

It fits well with a forest-based park holiday. Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm sits just 1.6 miles away, so you could base yourself there and use Broomhill for morning walks without thinking about it too much. Acorn Glade Glamping is 2.6 miles off if you want something slightly further. Both give you woodland on the doorstep without needing a car for every outing.

Honestly? It's not going to blow your mind, but that's rather the point. Sometimes a straightforward woodland walk beats a destination packed with Instagram opportunities. Good value for what it is.
