Dodsworth Wood

The woodland around Dodsworth, just outside York, gives you a proper sense of what the Yorkshire countryside was doing before the city expanded outward. It's dense enough to feel properly wild - tall trees, decent undergrowth, the sort of place where you actually lose the sound of traffic after five minutes of walking. Nothing fancy, no visitor centre or marked trails in the tourist sense, but that's rather the point.

You're looking at woodland walking country. Bring proper boots if the ground's been wet. The paths meander through, and there's enough cover that it works well when the weather's turning grey - which, let's be honest, is most of the time in Yorkshire. Families with older kids will find enough interest to justify an hour or two. Younger children might get restless unless they're the type who enjoy scrambling over fallen logs and spotting birds.

It's the sort of place walkers passing through York should factor in rather than treat as a destination itself. If you're staying at Ball Hall Farm, Acorn Glade, or any of the other glamping and wild camping spots nearby, it's within reasonable reach for an afternoon sortie. The proximity to York means you're never more than twenty minutes from proper amenities.

Go when it's not raining hard - the woodland's nice enough, but it's not transformative. Expect free access and no facilities. Just you, the trees, and the sort of quiet that reminds you why people move to the countryside in the first place.
