Old Plantation

A proper woodland walk awaits at Old Plantation, just outside York. This forest offers the kind of peaceful ramble you'll crave after a day pottering round the city walls - quiet paths threading through mature trees, the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong instead of tourist crowds. It's a genuine forest, not a manicured country park, so expect muddy tracks and dense woodland rather than manicured glades and signposted loops.

York locals treat this as their escape route, and for good reason. The woodland is substantial enough to get properly lost in for an hour or two without needing to be especially athletic. It's excellent for families with walkers aged eight and up who enjoy splashing through puddles and spotting wildlife. Younger kids might lose interest unless you're planning a proper woodland adventure with a picnic thrown in. The paths aren't brutally steep, but they're uneven enough to demand decent footwear, especially after rain.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Acorn Glade or Yapham Holds are within five miles - Old Plantation makes a solid morning activity before heading into York proper. Allow two hours minimum if you want to actually explore rather than just dash through. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities really. Bring water. Given its proximity to the city and the holiday parks dotted around the area, it's a practical inclusion rather than a destination-in-itself, but the woodland itself is lovely and genuine. Worth the detour if you want trees and quiet.
