Abney Low

The walk up Abney Low from Buxton is one of those Derbyshire outings that doesn't require crampons or a packed rope, yet still delivers proper views across the High Peak. It's a modest summit by Alpine standards, but that's precisely why it works - accessible enough for a family afternoon, interesting enough that you won't feel you've wasted the boot leather.

The route takes you across moorland with the kind of rolling visibility that makes you appreciate why the Peak District keeps drawing people back. On a clear day you can pick out the larger peaks in the distance, and the walk itself is gentle enough that younger legs won't rebel halfway through. Allow a couple of hours there and back, depending on pace and how long you linger at the top. Free to access, obviously - it's a fell, not a theme park.

Walkers will get the most from this, particularly those basing themselves at one of the nearby campsites like Derbyshire Hills Campsite or North Lees Campsite. It pairs well with exploring the wider area around Castleton and the Hope Valley - the kind of place where you've got half a dozen decent walks within striking distance. Families with older kids will find it manageable; the younger set might lose interest unless they're the sort to be entertained by spotting sheep and cairns.

Go when the weather's playing ball. Low cloud and Derbyshire moorland don't mix well - you'll be walking through grey cotton wool with nothing to see. Early morning gives you the best light and the fewest other walkers tramping about.
