Sir William Hill

Standing at 395 metres, this modest Peak District summit delivers surprisingly good views across the Hope Valley without demanding the lung-busting effort of its more famous neighbours. The climb from the roadside near Bradwell takes about 45 minutes through typical Derbyshire moorland - nothing too taxing, though proper walking boots are wise on the often boggy ground.

From the top, you'll see across to Kinder Scout and Bleaklow on clear days, with the limestone dales spreading out below. It's not the most dramatic peak in the area, but that's rather the point. Families with older children will find it manageable, and it's a decent warm-up walk for those tackling bigger hills later in the week.

The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - just a trig point and some rough grass - but the 360-degree panorama makes the modest effort worthwhile. Best visited on a crisp morning when visibility is good; in mist, you'll see nothing but your own feet.

For those staying at one of the nearby campsites like Chatsworth Park or Castleton, it's a proper half-day outing that leaves plenty of time for afternoon exploration of Buxton or the limestone caves around Castleton. Pack a thermos and make it a picnic - there's precious little shelter up there when the wind picks up.
