Eyam Dale Shaft

Access to this abandoned lead mine shaft is strictly by permission only, and frankly, most visitors won't get near it without proper caving credentials. Located in the limestone hills between Buxton and the Hope Valley, Eyam Dale Shaft represents the darker side of Derbyshire's industrial heritage - a vertical drop into the earth that once brought prosperity and peril in equal measure.

Serious cavers with the right kit and permissions might find it fascinating, but casual visitors should look elsewhere for their underground thrills. The surrounding Eyam Dale itself is lovely for walking, with proper footpaths that don't require ropes and headlamps.

Families staying at nearby sites like Chatsworth Park Caravan Club or Castleton would be better served exploring the show caves at Castleton or the Blue John Cavern instead. These offer all the underground drama without the technical climbing and safety concerns. The area around the shaft makes for decent hiking territory, but the main attraction remains firmly off-limits to most.
