Abergele Golf Club

An 18-hole links course just outside Abergele that's been going since 1910 - so you know the greens have had a proper battering and the clubhouse has seen a few centuries of weather. The layout runs across fairly exposed terrain with decent views towards the coast, and it's the sort of place where the wind becomes a proper player in your round, not just a mild inconvenience.

Golfers will find it straightforward enough - nothing that'll humiliate you, but enough character in the design to keep things interesting. The greens are quick and the fairways demand respect, especially if you're carrying a mid-range handicap. One or two holes catch you out with their approach angles, but that's what links golf does.

You'll want a good three to four hours for a full round, maybe 3.5 if you're walking. Best times are weekday mornings when you won't be queueing behind slow foursomes. Summer's obviously more forgiving weather-wise, though autumn can offer cracking conditions.

If you're staying at The Beach Caravan Park or one of the other parks within a couple of miles - Bron-y-Wendon or Ty Mawr - Abergele Golf Club makes a solid half-day outing without needing to trek far. It's not championship-level drama, but it's honest golf on decent ground. Phone ahead to check green fees and book a slot. Worth doing if you've got at least a mid-range swing and genuine interest in the game.
