Thetford

Ancient Roman roads still slice through this Norfolk market town like scars in the landscape, reminders of when Thetford was more significant than most people realise today. Walk down King Street and you're following routes that legions once marched, though now it's mostly locals heading to the shops.

The Brecks surround Thetford with an oddly beautiful landscape of heathland and pine forests. Cranwich Heath stretches for miles - proper wild country where you might spot deer if you're quiet enough. Hill Covert and Beech Wood offer decent woodland walks when you need to escape the town centre.

Church-spotting becomes something of an obsession here. Saint Mary's Church and All Saints' Church anchor the town, while a short drive reveals Saint George's Church and the rather lovely Saint George's at nearby villages. Each tells part of the area's story, though some are more rewarding than others.

Village signs dot the surrounding countryside like outdoor art galleries. Gooderstone Village Sign, Oxborough Village Sign, and Foulden Village Sign each celebrate local heritage in that particular Norfolk way. Gooderstone Water Gardens and Nature Trail makes for a pleasant afternoon if you're staying nearby - not groundbreaking, but well worth the detour.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A11 runs right past, connecting Thetford to Norwich in about 40 minutes. From London, it's roughly two hours by car.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to explore Thetford's Roman heritage and market town atmosphere, yet positioned ideally for venturing into Breckland's forests and heaths. The surrounding area rewards slow exploration rather than rushed day trips.
