Beech Wood

Walking into Beech Wood near Thetford feels like stepping back about two hundred years. The trees are tall and genuinely old - proper beech woodland, not the managed plantation stuff you find elsewhere in Norfolk. The ground is soft underfoot, carpeted with leaf litter that smells exactly as it should.

It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe properly. No crowds, no visitor centre shop, just woodland doing what woodland does. You'll see bluebells in spring if you time it right, and in autumn the whole place turns bronze and gold. The paths wind through without too much fuss - nothing too technical, which means families with younger kids can manage it without complaint.

Historically, this woodland is part of the old forest landscape that's been here since before the Normans showed up, though obviously bits have been managed and harvested over the centuries. It's the real deal Norfolk woodland rather than something artificially created.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're actually going to see it properly rather than just poking about for half an hour. Wear decent boots - it gets muddy. Spring and early autumn are genuinely the best times; mid-summer can feel a bit airless under all that canopy.
