Stratford-upon-Avon

Half the world knows this market town for one bloke who scribbled plays 400 years ago, but there's more to Warwickshire's crown jewel than Shakespeare alone. The River Avon curves through the centre like a lazy question mark, lined with weeping willows and the occasional swan looking thoroughly pleased with itself.

Shakespeare's Birthplace draws the tour buses, naturally. But step away from the Henley Street crowds and you'll find timber-framed houses that have nothing to do with the Bard - they're just properly old and lovely to look at. The Holy Trinity Church holds his tomb, while the Royal Shakespeare Company keeps his words alive in their riverside theatre. Performances run most of the year, though booking ahead is wise.

Beyond the town limits, the Warwickshire countryside opens up in gentle rolls of green. Gannaway Wood offers decent walking if you fancy stretching your legs away from the tourist trail. Saint James provides a quieter alternative to the busier central churches.

For families, Wag and Splash makes a splash with the kids - literally. It's one of those places that keeps children entertained while parents grab a proper coffee.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The M40 delivers you practically to the door, while the train from London takes under two hours to Stratford-upon-Avon station. Birmingham lies 22 miles northeast for bigger city diversions.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to walk into town for evening theatre, yet far enough out to escape the coach party madness. Several sites dot the surrounding countryside, offering everything from basic pitches to glamping pods for those who prefer their Shakespeare with a bit more comfort.
